Spark Mode

Walk past someone right for you, and you'll both know.

Turn on Spark Mode while your radar runs. When someone who fits you passes close by, both phones buzz, even if neither of you was looking at the screen.

Spark! Someone who fits you is very close

How it works

  1. 1

    Turn on Spark Mode

In Spark Mode Settings, switch it on and pick a range: 100 or 200 metres.

  2. 2

    Keep your radar running

Spark works while your radar search is on. The other person needs Spark Mode and a radar search running too.

  3. 3

    Both phones buzz

When someone who fits you comes within range, you both get an alert. In the app you see "Spark! ⚡", the first two letters of their name and the distance.

A moment from life

Thursday, 7:30 pm. You're walking home through the market.

Your radar has been on since you left work, Spark Mode too, and the phone is in your pocket. It buzzes: "Spark! ⚡", two letters of a name, a distance. Somewhere in this crowd, someone who fits you just got the same alert. You open her profile, hear her voice intro and tap "Connect".

What has to line up for an alert

  • You both have Spark Mode on.
  • You both have a radar search running.
  • You're within range: the smaller of the two you chose.
  • Your gender and age preferences match, both ways.
  • You haven't had a Spark together in the last 24 hours.

And nobody you blocked, or who blocked you, can ever set one off.

What to know

It's always mutual

Preferences are checked both ways, so when you get an alert, so does the other person. Nobody gets an alert about you unless you'd get one about them.

Your exact position, and what's kept

With Spark on, your phone sends its exact position to our server so it can measure the distance to people nearby. Only that distance is kept. Nobody sees where you are: not on the radar, and not in the alert.

"I am in a club"

Somewhere crowded? With Spark on, tap "I am in a club" in Spark Mode Settings. For 3 hours the range narrows, for every pair you're part of, and then it switches itself off. "Turn off now" ends it early.

A closer point, everywhere in the app

"Tighter location for Spark" is on by default, so Spark can tell who is really close. It applies everywhere in the app: others see you at a closer point, as with "Show closer location". You can turn it off.

It can miss someone

The check runs about once a minute while you're moving, and every 5 minutes otherwise. Positions are approximate and less accurate indoors, so a quick pass can go by without an alert.

Free, and it ends with your search

Spark Mode is free on every plan, with no limit. It switches off when your radar search ends, and the same two people get at most one Spark every 24 hours.

Questions about Spark Mode

Does the other person see where I am?

No. They see the first two letters of your name and a distance. To measure that distance your phone sends its exact position to our server, and only the distance itself is kept.

Someone walked right past me. Why no alert?

You both need Spark on and a radar search running, and your gender and age preferences have to match both ways. The check also runs only every minute or so while you move, and positions are less accurate indoors, so a quick pass can be missed.

I'm at a club. Will it buzz all night?

Tap "I am in a club" in Spark Mode Settings: the range narrows for 3 hours, then it switches itself off. And the same two people can only get one Spark every 24 hours.

Do I have to keep the app open?

No. If you leave searching outside the app switched on, your radar keeps running in the background and Spark keeps checking. An alert then reaches you as a notification.
