Safety and privacy, no small print.

What each tool does, how it works and where it stops. In plain words, so you know exactly what you're relying on, and what stays your call.

Safe Date · free on every plan

A friend you choose follows your date.

  1. 1

    Choose a guardian

From your friends in the app, by email address, or with an invite link you can send in any app. They accept before they become your guardian.

  2. 2

    Set up the date

Where you're meeting, who with (optional) and how often to check in: every half hour, hour, two hours, or your own interval. You can plan up to a week ahead, and your guardian is told.

  3. 3

    Go

Your guardian sees where you are during the date and gets an update on every check-in. A check-in is a tap on "I'm Safe", confirmed with your fingerprint or PIN.

And if you don't answer a check-in?

This runs on our server, not on your phone. Even if your phone switches off or the battery dies, your guardian is alerted.

  1. After 2 minutesA reminder to you.
  2. After 5 minutesAn automatic "Are you OK?" message in your chat with your guardian, and an alert to you both.
  3. After 7 minutesAn urgent alert to your guardian, with your last location, the meeting place and who you met.
  4. After 15, 30 and 60 minutesRepeat alerts, until your guardian confirms they've seen it.
  5. After 2 hoursThe date is marked as an emergency.

Emergency button

Tapping "Emergency" starts a 5-second countdown you can cancel. Then your guardian gets an urgent alert with your location, and it repeats until they acknowledge it. If the alert can't reach their phone, the app tells you to call them right away.

A PIN that can't be guessed quietly

Your PIN stays only on your phone. Five wrong tries lock it for a while, and your guardian is told.

What's kept afterwards

Only the last point is kept, not a route. Your location from the date is deleted after 7 days, or after 30 if there was an emergency.

Good to know: your guardian is a person you chose, not an emergency service. We don't call the police and don't send SMS: alerts arrive in your guardian's app, and from there they can call you or the local emergency number in one tap. Safe Date depends on your phone, its network and battery, and on your guardian.

Safe Date, step by step

Close, never pinpointed.

On the radar and in VibeSwipe, others see you at a fixed point in the middle of a square on the map, not where you are.

  • A square of 250 metres, or 100 metres if you chose "Show closer location". The point is up to about 177 metres (or about 71) from where you really are.
  • The same place always gives the same point, so several readings can't be combined to find you.
  • Distances are rounded to 50 metres. Names are cut to two letters until you match.
  • In IT'S A DATE!, people browsing see a meeting area of about 100 metres, not an exact point.
  • The app never asks for "all the time" location access and keeps no movement history. When a search ends, its location is deleted.
  • Your exact position is sent only when it's needed: in Safe Date, to the guardian you chose, and in Spark Mode, to measure the distance between two people. There it isn't stored, and no user ever sees it.
Where you really areWhat others see

Every photo is checked before anyone sees it.

Quarantine first, then publish

Every photo, on profiles and in chats, goes into quarantine and is checked. It goes live only if it passes.

What's checked

Nudity, and a match against a database of known child abuse material. For that check only a mathematical fingerprint leaves our server, never the photo.

No check, no publishing

If the checking system is unavailable, the photo waits. Anything unclear is looked at by a person.

No hidden data

Every photo is stripped of the hidden data inside it, including where it was taken.

Block them, and they're gone.

Block from a chat, a profile or a request. From then on you don't appear to each other on the radar, in Spark Mode, IT'S A DATE!, VibeSwipe or Voice Dating, and no request, message or call can pass between you. It works both ways and they're never told. They lose your conversation, while you keep it, in case you want to report.

Report it, and we look at it.

Report from a chat, from Voice Dating or after a date: inappropriate content, spam, harassment, a fake profile, fraud, or someone who looks under 18. Reports go to our moderation team.

When three different people report within 90 days that someone looks under 18, the account is suspended at once, pending review.

After the date

When you end a Safe Date, we ask whether you felt safe. Your answer is private: no user ever sees it, including the person you met. It helps our team notice worrying patterns.

And if something wasn't right, you can tell us what happened, in your own words.

Recommendations, not ratings

After a date that felt fine, you can recommend the person. The badge appears only once at least three different people who matched with them recommended them after a Safe Date. Nothing negative is ever shown publicly.

18+ only

You sign in with a Google account, and your date of birth is checked: under 18 can't get in. Anyone who once entered a date under 18 can't change it later.

Messages, calls and your data

Encrypted on our server

Messages are encrypted on our server. It isn't end-to-end encryption, and we say so plainly.

Notifications without content

Message text doesn't pass through Google's notification service. The notification only says a message arrived.

Calls that aren't recorded

Voice and video calls only after a match, and none of them is recorded.

Your data, in your hands

From Settings you can get a copy of your data by email, and delete your account at any time.

Your responsibility, our tools

NearbyLove is technology: an app that helps people who are nearby meet. The decisions are yours, and so is the responsibility for them.

  • Meeting people you don't know carries risk, online and in person. By using the app, you take that risk on yourself.
  • We don't check anyone's identity or background, including yours, and we don't vouch for anyone. Treat every profile as someone you haven't met yet.
  • We're not part of your meetings. Who to meet, where and when is your decision alone. For a first date, pick a public place and tell someone where you're going.
  • The safety tools help, but they depend on your phone, its network and battery, and on the people you choose. They can fail, and they don't replace your own judgement.
  • Safe Date is not an emergency service. If you're in danger, call your local emergency number first.

Go on the date. A friend you choose has your back.
