How it works

  1. 1

    Pick your guardian

Pick someone from your matches, add them by account email, or send an invite link. Once they accept, they're your guardian.

  2. 2

    Start a Safe Date

Add the meeting place, who you're meeting if you like, how often to check in, and a PIN or your fingerprint. Your guardian is told it started.

  3. 3

    Check in as you go

When a check-in is due, tap "I'm Safe" and confirm. If you don't, our server starts alerting your guardian on its own.

A moment from life

Friday, 8 pm. A first date at a wine bar across town.

Before you leave, you start a Safe Date: your friend Maya as guardian, the bar as the meeting place, regular check-ins. Maya gets a notification. Mid-evening a check-in comes due: you tap "I'm Safe" and use your fingerprint. At 10:40 you end the session, and Maya is told.

  1. 7:40 pm · Safe Date started
  2. 8:00 pm · You meet at the bar
  3. 9:10 pm · Check-in: "I'm Safe"
  4. 10:40 pm · Session ended

What your guardian sees

  • Your last shared location, how long ago it came in, and "Open in Maps".
  • The meeting place, and who you're meeting if you added them.
  • Your last and next check-in, and a log of what happened.
  • A chat with you, a one-tap "Are You OK?", and a button to call you.
  • Every missed check-in and SOS, as an urgent notification.

The person you're meeting is never told you started a Safe Date.

What to know

A person you chose, not an emergency service

Your guardian is a friend, not a rescue service. Safe Date depends on your phone, its network and battery, and on your guardian seeing the alert: a push notification, with no SMS and no automatic call. In danger, call your local emergency number.

If you miss a check-in

Our server takes over: a reminder to you at 2 minutes, an automatic "Are you OK?" in your guardian chat at 5, and at 7 an urgent alert to your guardian with your last location, the meeting place and who you're meeting. Repeats follow at 15, 30 and 60 minutes, and at 120 it becomes an emergency. It runs even if your phone is off.

The SOS button

"Emergency" starts a 5-second countdown you can cancel. Your guardian then gets an urgent alert with your last location, repeated at 5, 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes until they acknowledge. If it can't reach their phone, the app tells you to call them. No PIN needed.

Your PIN, and wrong tries

With a PIN or fingerprint set, check-ins and ending the session need it, so nobody else holding your phone can do it for you. Every 5 wrong PIN tries lock it for a while and tell your guardian.

If Android closes the app

Your phone shares its position about every 30 seconds. If Android closes the app, sharing stops and your guardian sees how old the last one is. Missed check-ins still alert them from our server.

What we keep, and for how long

Of your route, only the last position your phone shared is kept, not a trail. It's deleted after 7 days, or 30 after an emergency. Free on every plan, with no limits.

Safe Date is a tool you use, not a service that watches over you. Your guardian is a person you chose, it depends on your phone, its network and battery, and if you're in danger you call your local emergency number. Your responsibility, our tools

Questions about Safe Date

Does my guardian need the app?

Yes, on an Android phone. Send them an invite link: they install the app and join as a guardian only, with no dating profile. They don't appear anywhere in dating, and only you see their name. When they join, they become your guardian automatically. NearbyLove opens country by country, so they need to live where it's open.

Does the person I'm meeting know?

No. Your guardian is told when a Safe Date starts or is scheduled. The person you're meeting is never notified.

What if my phone dies?

Your position stops updating, and your guardian sees how long ago the last one came in. Check-ins are watched by our server, so a missed one still alerts your guardian. That's why it also depends on them seeing it.

What if the SOS can't get through?

The app says "Emergency NOT sent!" and retries every 10 seconds for up to 5 minutes, then tells you to call your guardian or emergency services. There's no SMS fallback, so if you can, call.
